I recently decided that my HRTools.com writing goal for this year is to help as many businesses as possible get out of the 2009-funk and find a better attitude and a better way of looking at business, and life, in 2010.

So to get things started, here’s a major lesson that all businesses should learn: There’s no such thing as competition.

What? What did she just say, you ask?

That’s right. There’s no such thing as competition. Here’s why:

  • There’s more than enough business to go around—There are so many people on this planet these days, there’s no need to worry about not getting enough business. There’s more than enough business to go around. Tell yourself that over and over again.

  • You’re not afraid—When you view something as “competition,” fear is present. It means that you’re afraid and worried that another business is going to be better than you or offer better products/services than you or be better at customer service, etc.

Seeing another business as “competition” just shows that you’re not confident enough in your business. If you were, you wouldn’t view them as competition.

  • Your beliefs create your reality—When you believe something, it manifests for you. That means if you believe that your “competition” has a better service than you do, you’re right. If you believe your “competitor” will put you out of business, they will.

And it also means, if you believe your company rocks and offers a fantastic service that your customers love, you’re also right.

Whatever you believe becomes your reality. You create your reality as you go along each day. So your business will only be as successful as you believe it will be.

Once you accept this truth—that there’s no such thing as competition—your business will literally transform overnight.

A Better Way of Seeing Things
Now that you know there’s no such thing as competition, your business can turn a corner and become whatever you dream it to be.

Here’s how to make the most of your new knowledge:

  • Be confident in your business—You know that your business rocks; you know no other company could ever come close to providing the kind of products and services that your company provides; you know that no other company can match the quality you offer. So stand tall, be proud and remain confident in that knowledge.

  • Believe in your company—If you believe it, it becomes your reality. So believe in your company. Believe that what you have to offer customers is exactly what they need. Believe that your 2010 goals will be fulfilled—ten-fold. Believe that your business has what it takes to become whatever you envision for it.

Your beliefs create your reality, so if you believe in your company—and I mean truly believe in it—it will happen for you.

  • Keep a positive attitude always—With so much negative stuff going on in the world around you, it can be difficult to keep a positive outlook on things. But you need to learn how to be positive, despite all the negativity going on around you. When you are able to do that, you will be in full control of yourself, your life and your outcomes.

The same goes for your business. When you approach everything in your business with a positive attitude, you’ll get positive results, time and time again.

And positive attitudes are contagious, which means your good attitude will rub off on the people at your company, employees included.

  • Don’t worry about what other companies are doing—You have enough to think about with your own company, why spend any time worrying about what other companies are doing? Focus on your company and your company only.

When you spend time worrying, you’re fueling the fear that your “competition” is going to one-up you in some way. And since there’s no such thing as competition, you have nothing to worry about.

  • Provide as much service and added value as possible—When you’re focusing on bettering your company; when you’re focusing on improving your customers’ experiences; when you’re focusing on adding as much value to your products and services offerings as possible, you have no time to worry or think about your non-existent competition.

Best of all, the additional work you put into your business will go a step further to show how great your company is, and prove that the businesses you used to view as competition couldn’t hold a candle to your company.

Now that you know an important secret for business success, you need to decide how you’re going to use this information. No matter what you decide to do with it—use it, ignore it—keep in mind your choice will dictate your outcomes.
