Employee Relations Training Should Be Proactive Rather Than Reactive

Employee relations refers to the working relationship between management and the employees or the “people” in the company. A positive relationship between management and the employees is often the critical factor in the retention of the quality people who can make the difference in the overall success of a company. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why many HR departments are now more focused on the importance of employee relations training, and they may even refer to themselves as the “people” department or the “people place”.

If the premise of HR is people relations, and it’s true that employees are a company’s greatest asset, then it only makes good business sense for companies to develop an effective employee relations training plan for those valuable employees.

Employee Relations Training Should Be Planned
Although employee relations training can be utilized when correcting personnel problems, taking a pro active approach rather than a knee jerk reactive approach is much more effective in maintaining the focus and desired direction of the training, as well as minimizing the time and impact that handling negative employee relations issues can cause.

Situations that Could Warrant People Relations Training
Your people are part of your organization. So employee relations training really covers every part of conducting business, but it’s especially important in areas such as:

  • Recruiting
  • Employee orientations
  • Employee counseling
  • Performance evaluations
  • Customer service

Most company CEO’s are well aware of the fact that good employee relations don’t just happen naturally. Planning ahead and providing a quality employee relations training plan equips managers, many of whom may be new to managing people, with the tools necessary to encourage interaction, open communication, and to develop good listening skills which can result in a positive impact for everyone in the company.
