Generation Y is the most socially-conscious generation to date. We’re out in the world volunteering our time for causes that matter to us, and trying to make a difference. So one valuable recruiting tool a company could have is an employer-sponsored volunteer program.

My employer, Insperity, has a volunteer program that allows me to take time out during my work week to spend an hour or two helping out my favorite charity or helping at one of the many company-sponsored events.

“A fundamental belief of Insperity since its inception is the inherent and priceless value of the individual and the conviction that it is right and good for each to contribute what he can to enrich the quality of life for others,” said Leesa Love, senior corporate volunteer coordinator at Insperity. “Insperity employees have embraced this value and are united in the passion to give back to the communities across the nation where they work and live.”

Being able to volunteer during work hours helps me maintain an even better work-life balance.

So what kind of volunteer opportunities can you offer your employees?

“Insperity sponsors events such as mentoring, reading buddies, walk-a-thons, bowl-a-thons, golf tournaments, galas, soup kitchens, food drives, blood drives, etc.,” Love said.

Insperity focuses its volunteer efforts in four categories: elderly, education, social service and health, which includes work with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Salvation Army, Somebody Cares, the Special Olympics and the YMCA.

When it comes to offering employees company-sponsored volunteer opportunities, there are many benefits for the employer as well. Love gives the following benefits:

  • It enables employers to provide a form of work-life balance to their employees
  • It enables the employer to confirm to stakeholders that the company is socially responsible and is upholding its commitment to the community
  • Can be used in the company’s recruiting process to secure the best talents who also have a philanthropic spirit
  • Can be used in a company’s sales process to show their commitment of care to the community.
