Scientific Evidence Supports Anecdotal Experience
We have for years encouraged the use measures of cognitive ability, personality and emotional intelligence to predict job performance in the hiring process. Since we have done this type of assessment for many years we knew, from the results our clients received, that these three measures were very powerful when used together. We had our anecdotal experience but we did not have scientific proof. Now we have research that supports the power of this combination.
A recent study presented at the Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology conference in New York finally demonstrated what we have been saying all along. The published data from 36 studies were combined to determine incremental contribution of each of the three dimensions. A significant finding is that each of the three measure something different. Secondly, Emotional Intelligence combined with measures of Personality and Cognitive Ability significantly impact ability to successfully predict job performance. Cognitive ability is still the best single predictor and when combined with Emotional Intelligence and Personality the three dimensions together produced the best results. And finally, all three together reduced likelihood of adverse impact.
