Generation Y
Biography: Jennifer Blanchard

I am a Creative Marketing Writer at Administaff in Kingwood, Texas, and a proud member of Generation Y.

Prior to becoming an HR writer, I was an Associate Editor at two business-to-business magazines in Southern California, and an Assistant Web Content Producer for a Gannett Company, Inc. newspaper in New York. At both jobs I helped the company further develop an online presence and grow Web site content and user traffic.

Ever since I had an e-mail pen pal in seventh grade, I've been obsessed with the Internet. I view it as the future of everything--writing, reading, business, marketing, human resources, etc. So I've always tried to keep myself involved with it, whether that be in my job or in my personal time, and I take advantage of every Web training course I can find. For me, learning as much as I can about the Internet is key to my continued success.

Recently, I've also been especially interested in blogging and its impact on society. Blogging is such a new concept, but I see it growing into the media outlet of the future. I read several blogs on a daily basis, and look forward to writing more posts for my HRTools blog, "Generation Y."

I have a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Public Relations from Utica College, and have been writing since I was old enough to hold a pencil. I’ve published hundreds of articles in national and local magazines and newspapers, and have had my own column twice. I also have almost 25 years experience being Generation Y.

When I’m not blogging and producing content for HRTools.com, I read every book about writing I can get my hands on, I take creative writing workshops, I freelance, and I volunteer in my community through Administaff.

Creating a Dress Code that Includes Jeans

Preventing Sexual Harassment of Teen Workers

As the summer approaches and schools let out, more and more teenagers are going to be looking for part-time jobs to earn some extra money while they’re off. This is a great way for them to get some work experience.

Five Common Gen Y Myths Busted

When I first started writing this blog, I didn’t know a whole lot about Generation Y, even though I’m a member of it. But that didn’t deter me from writing about it.

Embrace Technology—New Ways to Recruit Generation Y

Generation Y is a technology generation. We embrace new technologies as they come out, and we not only learn how to use them, but we master them.

Don’t Let Repetitive Motion Injuries Damage Your Workplace

Although carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and repetitive motion injuries (RMI) are usually seen in adults over 30, due to the popularity of cell phone texting, video gaming and home computers, people as young as age 9 are experiencing the pain.

Employee Training Affects The Credibility of Your Organization

As a Generation Yer, I am a believer in continuous education. In fact, this is not just an idea, but a way of life for me. I’ve been going to school pretty much my entire life.

Respond to Workplace Changes As An Opportunity

Last week I attended Administaff’s New Employee Orientation program. When I was a new-hire, none of the dates coincided with my schedule, but I did want to go through the program at some point, if only to learn more about my company and what it’s all about.

Employer-Sponsored Volunteer Opportunities Are Good For Recruiting and Retention

Generation Y is the most socially-conscious generation to date. We’re out in the world volunteering our time for causes that matter to us, and trying to make a difference. So one valuable recruiting tool a company could have is an employer-sponsored volunteer program.

Life-Long Learners: Part 4—Learning from Generation Y

Part 1 (Educational Assistance Programs), Part 2 (On-the-Job Training) and Part 3 (Mentors at Work) of the Life-Long Learners series focus on what employers can do to teach Generation Y, but Gen Yers actually have a lot that they can teach their employers, managers, co-workers, etc. Here are 11 lessons you can learn from Generation Y.

Life-Long Learners: Part 3—Mentors at Work

If you want to recruit, hire and retain more members of Generation Y, you need to appeal to their love of education, also previously discussed in Part 1 (Educational Assistance Programs) and Part 2 (On-the-Job Training). Another way to do this is to assign each Gen Y employee (or any new employee) a mentor.

Life-Long Learners: Part 2—On-The-Job Training

As discussed in Part 1 (Educational Assistance Programs) of the Life-Long Learners series, Generation Yers love to learn. And although they bring certain skill sets with them as they enter the workplace, they are always ready and willing to learn more. This is where on-the-job training opportunities come into play.

Life-Long Learners: Part 1—Educational Assistance Programs

Generation Y is one of the most educated generations to date, and we love to learn. In fact, college is no longer reserved for the elite; it is now considered the norm. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 69 percent of high school graduates immediately attend college in the fall following graduation.

Part 3: Consider Giving Your Employees Time for Personal Projects

Part 1 (Flexible Work Schedules Will Attract More Gen Y Employees To Your Company) and Part 2 (Measure Employee Results Instead of Monitoring Clock Time) of this series on Flexible Work Schedules discuss allowing employees to have more flexibility in when, where and how often they work. Part 3, however, brings to the table an idea that is not totally new, but that hasn’t been widely implemented—Offering employees a “Pet Projects” Program.

Part 2: Measure Employee Results Instead of Monitoring Clock Time

As previously discussed in Part 1 (Flexible Work Schedules Will Attract More Gen Y Employees To Your Company), Generation Y has a work to live, not a live to work attitude.

Part 1: Flexible Work Schedules Will Attract More Gen Y Employees To Your Company

According to Katherine Lockett, author of “Work-Life Balance for Dummies,” work-life balance is: “The need of all individuals to achieve and maintain a balance between paid work and life outside of work.”

Don't Judge Us 'Til You Know Us

Generation Yers get pinned all the time with inaccurate tags, such as “we’re a lazy generation” or “we don’t want to pay our dues.”

Five Reasons You Should Allow Employees to Wear Jeans to Work

For years, and especially since denim has become mainstream, there has been a significant debate over whether or not jeans are appropriate everyday wear for the office.

Challenge No. 1: Getting us in the door

According to Penelope Trunk of TIME magazine, “Generation Y is forcing companies to think more creatively about the work-life balance.” And those employers who do are hiring more and more Gen Y employees everyday.
