Calif. extends regulation of car washing industry

California's Labor Code regulates the car wash industry. This law, scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2010, is now extended to January 1, 2014. The law is also amended to specify that a new motor vehicle dealer or an automotive repair dealer is not an "employer" for purposes of these regulatory provisions (California Ch. 223 (A.B. 236), L. 2009, enacted October 11, 2009, and effective January 1, 2010).

California Labor Code Sections 2050 through 2068 regulate the car washing and polishing business, requiring specific recordkeeping requirements for wages, hours and working conditions, requiring employers to register with the Labor Commissioner annually, and imposing penalties for violations.
