The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) allows for a federal subsidy of 65 percent of an applicable COBRA premium to qualifying individuals whose health care coverage was lost due to an involuntary termination of employment between Sept. 1, 2008 and Dec. 31, 2009.
According to a U.S. Department of Labor Web site page: "ARRA mandates that plans notify certain current and former participants and beneficiaries about the premium reduction."
Generally the deadline for complying with notice distribution requirements is April 18, 2009.
For more information about notice requirements, eligibility and other related details, contact the U.S. Department of Labor or visit online at: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/COBRAmodelnotice.html.
