How to support the troops during the holiday season
Many American employers and workers want to show their support for the troops, especially now during the holiday season.
Ask any veteran. Cards, letters and packages received during the holidays can make such a difference in the life of a homesick member of the Armed Forces. Far from home, our military men and women, and their families, certainly deserve to have their spirits lifted.
Holiday mailing deadlines are quickly approaching. To help US businesses and employers plan and coordinate efforts, the following resources are provided to help everyone get started.
The US Department of Defense Community Relations and America Supports You serves to connect US citizens with military men and women and their families. Visit the Web site at www.ourmilitary.mil to get more details and information. Click on "Sending Care Packages to Troops" for package-mailing instructions.
The United States Postal Service also has a Supporting Our Troops Web site page. This USPS page has information about topics ranging from military mailing restrictions (for security purposes, etc.) to how to donate blood for the troops..
Mailing tips are also provided. As an example: The Post Office suggests removing batteries from battery-powered items and wrapping them separately.
In order to communicate with and express support for the troops this holiday season, and to learn more about shipping and/or mailing deadlines, see the USPS' online 2009 Holiday Shipping Deadlines and scroll down to "Military Mail Deadlines."
America Supports You reminds Americans to remember our veterans and their families at home, and in local areas, as well.
