SSA increases transaction fee for Social Security Number verification

The Social Security Administration has announced that it is increasing the transaction fee for an automated Social Security Number verification service that it provides to private companies and government agencies. The current fee of $0.56 will increase to $5.00, effective October 1, 2009. The verification service for which the fee is being increased is known as the Consent Based Social Security Number Verification Service, and is used when a business or government agency obtains a valid, signed consent form from the Social Security Number holder.

The increase was necessary to cover operating costs, according to the Administration, because the volume of requests is less than expected.
