Checklist: Pros and Cons of Computer Monitoring

Checklist: Pros and Cons of Computer Monitoring

Many unions and employee groups oppose computer monitoring, claiming it:

  • Invades workers' privacy;
  • Increases stress levels;
  • Frustrates employees' efforts to do high quality work by emphasizing quantitative measurements; and
  • Erodes workers' dignity.

Advocates of computer monitoring, however, view the techniques as an efficient way to:

  • Enhance productivity through production standards;
  • Cost and schedule jobs;
  • Project downtime and staffing needs; and
  • Diagnose work flow and job design problems.
