Sample Holiday Policy

Sample Holiday Policy

[The following sample policy statements are for holiday leave. Generally, holidays are paid leave with no loss of credit for the employee's length of service with the organization.]

In order to qualify for holiday pay, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a full-time employee on the active payroll and not on leave of absence, layoff, etc.
  • You must have worked the day before and the day after the holiday. Should you be unable to work either of these two days because of illness, satisfactory proof of illness will be required in order to qualify for the paid holiday.

Holiday pay will not be paid to the following:

  • an employee who has been on the payroll less than ninety (90) days;
  • an employee who is on lay-off status;
  • a temporary or seasonal employee;
  • an employee whose department is not in operation because of a temporary shutdown;
  • an employee on leave of absence when said holiday occurs;
  • an employee who requested to work during a paid holiday who refuses to do so.

If a holiday occurs within a vacation period, your vacation will be extended by the number of holidays falling during the vacation period or an equal number of vacation days will be carried forward for future use.

The Floating Holidays are scheduled to provide you with periodic extended weekends. The dates normally are established during the first quarter of each year.

If any of the specified holidays fall on a Saturday, such holiday will usually be observed the preceding Friday. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will usually be observed as the holiday.

Holiday pay shall consist of eight (8) hours pay, at the regular straight time hourly rate. The shift differential for second and third shift employees will not be included in the holiday pay.

Employees will receive a listing of annual holidays when they are hired and the first of each year. Employees may also request a copy of the list of holidays for the year from their supervisor or the Human Resources department.
