Are computer use policies necessary?

Because of this widespread use of computers, employers should consider formulating a computer use policy. Whether or not a company chooses to institute a separate policy dealing with the use of computer technology, a thorough review of existing documents and policies is recommended. For example, confidentiality agreements, handbooks, employee communications and policies on employee conduct, use of business property, and sexual harassment should be updated to include applicable provisions of a computer use policy. State clearly that each policy includes electronic transmissions.

Employers should specifically prohibit cursing, possession of pornography, and any harassing actions. Also, prohibit using company resources to visit Internet sites that are pornographic, promote gambling, areas that transmit hate mail or have no current business purpose to the employee.
