How should a promotion be documented?
Treat the promotion process the same way as the hiring process. Carefully document promotion decisions in order to prevent Equal Employment Opportunity challenges. Remember that documentation is much more difficult under a merit system than a seniority system, because merit judgments are harder to make and because they tempt individual managers to inject their own opinions at many steps in the evaluation process.
Document a rejection as well as a promotion decision.
