How should an EAP program be communicated to employees?

How should an EAP program be communicated to employees?

An EAP is of little value to employees if they do not know about it. Here are some different types of communication devices that can be used to generate greater employee awareness of the EAP:

  • brochures or memos;

  • bulletin boards;

  • company newsletters;

  • employee handbooks;

  • letters mailed to employees' homes;

  • new employee orientation meetings;

  • payroll enclosures;

  • presentations by EAP counselors;

  • presentations by HR or managers;

  • supervisory referrals; or

  • videos.

No matter which forms of communication you choose, remember to remind employees at least annually of the availability of EAP.

Don't forget to train your supervisors and managers. They need to be aware of the EAP and its services because they need to know how to make referrals and because the EAP can be a resource in handling unusually difficult performance or counseling issues.
