The investigation is complete, now what
Once the investigation is complete, the next step is to determine whether there has been any workplace misconduct or policy violations. Before making any conclusions, you should:
- review all the documentation;
- determine the credibility of the witnesses; and
- weigh the facts.
HR's main objective should be to resolve a complaint to the satisfaction of all concerned --to the extent possible and reasonable. Whatever the result of the investigation, however, it is important to ensure that any conclusion is well-founded and solidly supported by facts in the investigative record.
Review the documentation. As you review your documentation:
- ensure that the documentation is complete;
- determine if there are any conflicting statements;
- remove anything that is not relevant (anything that does not tend to prove or disprove the allegation being investigated).
By sticking to the goals you established at the beginning of the investigation, and by concentrating on gathering only relevant evidence during the investigation, you should end up with documentation that proves, or disproves the underlying allegations.
