Which forms must be filed for legal plans?

Legal service plans are not required to file Schedule F of Form 5500 (Fringe Benefit Plan Annual Information Return) as these plans are no longer considered qualified fringe benefit plans. However, any legal plan that is an ERISA-regulated welfare plan, must file a Form 5500, unless subject to an exception (see Instructions to Form 5500). Most likely, filing requirements will apply to prepaid legal plans but not to legal services plans, as these plans are usually offered on a voluntary basis.
