Why consider implementing a telecommuting program?

Telecommuting enables employees to work at home or at another location. True telecommuters may send or receive work assignments between home and the workplace via electronic messaging, calendaring, conferencing, voice mail and computer networks, but the concept applies equally well to employees who perform their work assignments at home and simply mail or deliver them to the office.

How does telecommuting benefit the organization? There are numerous advantages to a telecommuting program. In many instances, telecommuting offers companies an opportunity to reduce overhead expenses and provide flexibility. It can also lead to greater productivity, less absenteeism, greater work flexibility and increased morale.

Telecommuting impacts staffing by allowing a broader recruiting pool, less turnover and a good alterative to relocation. Customer service can be improved through expanded business hours. Telecommuters are weatherproof, giving employers the ability to have staff work from home during inclement weather.

Employee advantages. Employees like telecommuting because it eliminates commuting time, allowing them to spend more time with their families and in personal pursuits, and reduces stress associated with the drive and some on-the job stress as well. Productivity often improves.

What are the disadvantages of telecommuting? Employees fear that their opportunity for advancement and promotions will be reduced due to decreased visibility and that they may be the first to go during a layoff. They worry about malfunctioning technology.

Managers fear that telecommuting would make it difficult to deal with an employee's poor work performance and that telecommuters cannot handle quick-turnaround projects, at the same time fearing that telecommuters will create extra work for non-telecommuters.
