Why do many managers and supervisors find the counseling process to be very difficult?

Common reasons for not counseling employees include:

  • Managers do not accept that counseling is a superior's responsibility.
  • Managers are not held accountable or measured on counseling employees.
  • Face-to-face conversations about sensitive, personal matters are difficult and not really job related.
  • Some managers may not understand the value of counseling to employees.
  • Superiors use coaching methods as opposed to counseling methods.
  • Counseling is too difficult, not easily learned and not directly related to work.
